IPTV for Smart TV

Smart TV is not one platform. A television sold in the US may run Google TV, Fire TV, Roku TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS or Vizio SmartCast, and each one handles IPTV differently. Choosing the right approach for your set is the difference between a five minute setup and an afternoon of frustration.

This page explains what each platform supports, when a small streaming stick is the better answer, and how to complete setup on a television that does have a native player.

Smart TV compatibility

What works, what does not, and which install route applies to this platform.

Best native support
Google TV and Fire TV built-in televisions
Good native support
Samsung Tizen and LG webOS via store-listed players
Needs an external device
Older Vizio SmartCast sets and most pre-2018 televisions
Recommended add-on
A Fire TV Stick 4K or Chromecast with Google TV

Before you start

  • A working Smart TV connected to your home network
  • A broadband connection of at least 15 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K
  • An active VexaStream subscription and the login details emailed after checkout
  • A player app that supports the M3U or Xtream Codes format

How to set up IPTV on Smart TV

Follow these steps in order. Most subscribers finish in under ten minutes.

  1. 1

    Identify your TV platform

Open the TV settings and look for the system or About screen. It will name Google TV, Fire TV, Roku TV, Tizen, webOS or SmartCast. Everything after this depends on that answer.

  2. 2

Search the built-in app store for an IPTV player

Open the store on the TV and search for an IPTV player that supports M3U or Xtream Codes. Samsung and LG both list several. If nothing suitable appears, skip to step three.

  3. 3

Add a streaming stick if the TV has no suitable player

A Fire TV Stick or Chromecast with Google TV plugs into HDMI, costs less than a service call, and gives you a modern player with regular updates on any television with a spare port.

  4. 4

    Enter your credentials and sync

In the player, create an Xtream Codes profile with the server URL, username and password from your welcome email, then wait for the channel list and guide to finish loading.

  5. 5

Set picture and audio to match your source

Turn off aggressive motion smoothing for live sports and set the audio output to match your soundbar or receiver so you do not lose surround tracks.

Smart TV troubleshooting

The issues our support team sees most on this platform, with the fix that resolves each one.

The TV store has no IPTV player at all

That platform does not support one. Add an HDMI streaming stick rather than trying to sideload onto a locked-down television.

The player quit working after a TV firmware update

Reinstall it from the store. Firmware updates occasionally clear sideloaded or store-cached apps, and a reinstall restores the profile in a couple of minutes.

The picture looks soft on a 4K TV

Confirm the source stream is HD or 4K rather than SD, and check that the TV is not upscaling from a low-resolution stream while an energy-saving picture mode is active.

Streams stop when the TV sleeps

Disable automatic power saving and idle timeout in the TV settings, or restart the stream after wake.
