Most buffering complaints are not caused by a slow internet plan. They are caused by a connection that is fast on paper and unstable in practice. This guide gives you the numbers to plan around, then the checks that matter more than the numbers.
Baseline figures per stream
- SD channels: roughly 3 to 5 Mbps.
- HD channels at 1080p: roughly 8 to 15 Mbps depending on the source bitrate.
- 4K channels: roughly 25 Mbps and upward, sustained.
These are sustained figures, not peaks. A connection that measures 50 Mbps in a speed test but drops to 6 Mbps for a few seconds each minute will stall an HD stream even though the average looks comfortable.
Budgeting for a whole household
Add the requirement for each simultaneous stream, then add headroom for everything else on the network — a work laptop, a games console downloading in the background, and security cameras uploading continuously. A practical rule for a three-stream household watching HD is a 100 Mbps plan or better.
Why jitter and Wi-Fi matter more
- Run a speed test on the device that buffers, not on your phone next to the router.
- If the streaming device is on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, move it to 5 GHz. This single change fixes a large share of buffering reports.
- Where a wire is possible, use it. An Ethernet adapter for a Fire TV Stick costs very little and removes the wireless variable entirely.
- Check for interference from neighbouring networks; a congested channel behaves like a slow connection.
When the problem is not your connection
If one channel stalls while everything else plays perfectly, the source stream is the issue rather than your network.
