The device you watch on has more effect on day-to-day experience than most people expect. Two things matter: how many capable player apps the platform allows, and whether the hardware has enough memory to handle a long channel list and a full program guide.
Amazon Fire TV — the easiest all-rounder
Fire OS is Android underneath, so player choice is wide, and the 4K Max has enough headroom for high-bitrate streams. It is inexpensive, it is what most US households already have, and setup is well documented. See our Firestick guide.
Android TV and Google TV — the most flexible

Apple TV — the most stable

Samsung and LG — fine, with caveats
Both have store-listed players, both often require a one-time activation on the developer's own portal, and both are limited to sets from roughly 2016 to 2017 onward. Built-in TV Wi-Fi is usually weaker than a dedicated stick. See the Samsung and LG guides.
Roku — the one to avoid for IPTV
Roku curates its channel store tightly, does not allow ordinary sideloading, and has less memory than comparable Android hardware. If live internet TV is your main use case, plug a Fire TV Stick into a spare HDMI port instead. Our Roku page explains the options honestly.

- Budget: Fire TV Stick 4K.
- Best overall: Nvidia Shield or Apple TV 4K.
- Already own a recent Samsung or LG: try the built-in store first.
- Own only a Roku: add an HDMI streaming stick.
